I hate the frakking friend zone, you know? No girl ever seems to see me as anything besides... I don't know, a kid. Or any guy, for that matter, but I'm so afraid of my own bicuriosity that I don't even want to admit it to myself. I'm not that young.
I haven't had a real date that didn't involve a mistaken identity or being used for some ulterior motive since high school, pretty much.
It just freaks me out sometimes, because I'm afraid I'm going to end up alone.

[Lucy laughed at that and then stopped in front of the door to the karaoke bar.]

You're welcome and this is our stop. How do you take your drinks?

[He steps ahead to hold the door.]

Uh... how...? Er, very carefully?

[And he's passed test #2 with flying colors. It was a 'will he open the door' test, just so you know. Lucy breezes through the door with a grin.]

That's a shame 'cause I tend to take them very not carefully.

[She giggles, grinning with the tip of her tongue between her teeth.]

Usually shots with fun names like Pineapple Upside Down Cake, Alabama Slammer, Rootbeer float and my very favorite, chocolate cake.

The mint juleps and beer are for the careful drinking, also known as chasing.

Oh, wow. [He is trying to memorise all of this now.] You know a lot more about this than I do-- I usually just drink beer. I've never even had shots before.

I was in a sorority in college. [Clearly this explains it.] We can drink beer but we need shots too.

[She slides up to the bar but looks back at Neil.] Any beer preference?

[She nods, orders a Becks for Neil and a Blue Moon for her then she orders two chocolate cake shots. The beers come immediately but the shots take a second to mix when they come they're a creamy brown color. The shot glasses have a heavy rim of sugar and there are lemon slices perched on them. Lucy slides one shot over to him. She takes a sip of the beer first.]

Okay, you're going to lick the sugar, slam the shot and then bite the lemon. The whole effect is a really yummy piece of chocolate cake.

[Neil nods, taking all of this in.] Oh. Shots are complicated. [He smiles a little.] Uhmm, okay, so do we count down from three or something?

Not all shots. Some are just chugchug. The really good ones are complicated. Count of three sounds good.

[She picks up her shot glass, takes the lemon off the rim and holds it in her left hand.]

[On one, she licks the sugar off the rim of the glass then tosses back the shot then bites down hard on the lemon with a giggle.]

[Only slightly after the count of three, Neil follows suit. He manages not to choke or spill, but he does bite a little too hard into the lemon and end up with juice on his chin. He laughs as he swipes it away with the back of his hand.]

Nice.

[He flashes Lucy a thumbs-up, then takes a swig of his beer.]

[Lucy smiles at him, her bottom lip tucked between her teeth. She nods and then takes a sip of her beer.]

See, shots are fun. And it helps the karaoke go down a little smoother.

That's probably true. I'd better not drink too much, though, or I'll sing just as bad as anyone.

[Well, he says that, but his words don't really match up with the way he's guzzling his beer.]

Are you kidding? I'm pretty sure karaoke is Japanese for 'bad singing' and I don't even speak conversational Japanese. [She nudges him with her foot and laughs then she leans over and orders two grape sodas, more shots, uncomplicated this time with the added bonus of red bull.]

Look at you with the big brains. [The shots come, purple and fizzy. She passes his over.]

[Neil pumped up on redbull and alcohol sounds like the best idea ever.]

[Neil beams at the praise.] Okay, I'll count this time?
One, two, three!

[Neil knocks it back, and he totally recognises the taste of Redbull. He's used that for late-night gaming fuel many times.]
This totally has Redbull in it! Awesome.

[Lucy slams hers back and laughs] It does. It's called a grape soda and it has grape schnapps and Redbull in it.
