[She's very aware that she's being difficult about all of this. Part of the 'being difficult' is born out of outright fear and defense, to keep him from getting close enough to hurt her--as if he couldn't already; maybe she should add the qualifier 'more' to that sentence--and part of it is offense. If he gets past all the difficult, then in some way that doesn't necessarily make sense, she's certain it means he won't hurt her.]
