Absolutely. I've a friend back home who can relate, I think; loads of people sort of took him for granted, and even when he spoke up, most just laughed. [She pauses, then states delicately,] Gits. But when things got hard, he stepped up, became something of a hero.

A few years? It was a confidence thing, really. People believing in him before he could believe in himself, you know? At least at first. Maybe. Hasn't always got to be that way, though.

Back home, you mean? Apart from classes... sports, friends, the usual. My world hasn't got much in the way of technology; at least, not like the City.

So, what kind of sports? [This is a long-shot for a conversation topic because the only thing Neil's even vaguely familiar with is hockey, but he'll give it a try anyway.]

There's this guy, Zack Rogue. [Because he's assuming a world without video games is probably also a world without Rogue Wave.] He's pretty cool-- lost his job when the economy was bad, so he just decided to start a band instead. I guess he'd be, like my main musical influence or whatever.

Absolutely. It's better than sitting around and waiting for the deities to do something absurd again. I don't much fancy the idea of settling and making a life here, but sometimes that's the best way to go about it if you don't want to go mad. At least, that's how I feel. Then again, it's been a while.
