Today we commemorate the occasion of my birth, occurring on this day some twenty-and-two years ago, or thereabouts.
[He clears his throat.]
As celebration, I am of a mind to search out and take on a dire wolf pup of my own. Together, the two of us will surely be able to retrieve the prize of the day.
All those who would accompany me and offer your services to my cause, I should be glad of your company.
...Oh. And since I've no wish of my own, let the reward go to he or she whom I name bravest warrior in the party.

[Stephen strolls into the frame, dressed far more sensibly than Neil is. He's wearing his hiking boots and his extremely unflattering cut-off jeans, along with the usual plaid shirt. He has a back-pack on as well. Being the sensible one of the household, he decided to stock them up on water and sandwiches before heading out. Because it's your birthday, Neil, there is smoked salmon in yours.]

I'm only carrying the pack because it's your birthday, man. You don't get out of this just because you have a fancy cloak on.

[Deeper in the wood, they do indeed begin to see frost on the earth, which makes Neil plunge on even more excitedly. But the path narrows and then forks off around the trunk of a rather large tree, one fork twisting uphill, and the other winding down a narrow slant. Neil stops and looks back and forth, considering.]

We should've brought a ranger, man. If we had a ranger in our party, he'd know what to do.
